Up in the hills of Kerala we have seven strong growing Self Help Groups (SHGs). A few years ago we gave them a grant to get involved with a business. They started with Cassava (tapioca) production. Now the business grown  and they have started textiles trading. It all started with £200 pounds.

Nearly 200 women are participating in our eleven Self Help Groups, a programme where women come together for training in long-term financial planning, receive specific training for small-scale business enterprises, and collectively save in a fund used for business investments.

These groups are a part of our larger Micro Enterprise Programme, through which 100 women have received loans to start small business ventures.

Tripti is a member of the Ashar allo (Light of Hope) Self Help Group based in Prattapur, West Bengal. She now earns her living through the embroidery work that she started, making things like ladies bags, cushion covers, bed spreads and wall hangings. She is able to make a reasonable income to send her two children to school and buy them school books and uniforms.
